All You Need Is Love

Would you look at the state of this blog site?  Someone should really call the authorities and have my blog taken from me for neglect.  One might think I'd died since my last post, but fear not.  I am not dead.  In fact I'm alive and writing a new blog post!  I've also been working like a pack mule throughout the winter and I've got a good amount of work to show for it!  Here are a couple of the posters I've done for the Paramount recently.  The first was for the 50th anniversary of the Beatles takeover of America, and the second was for an old silent film called "Tumbleweeds."  More movie posters to follow in the coming days!

Doctor Who?

Hello webfolk, how's tricks?  So today is a big day for Whovians, as Doctor Who is celebrating it's 50th anniversary.  To mark this occasion, the Paramount commissioned me to do a poster for their screenings of Day of the Doctor!  Now, I must admit that I knew nary a thing about the good Doctor going into this project, which made it particularly challenging.  I mean, how does one wrap up 50 years worth of television that one hasn't seen in a single image.  This one obviously had his work cut out for him.  Luckily my roommate is a big fan and guided me through some of the particulars.

Posters Revisited

I was recently asked for a print of the Jackie Brown poster that I did earlier this year, but  with the title integrated into the design.  I decided to also tweak the frame size and add a border so it would better match the posters I've been doing for The Paramount.  I was so pleased with the way it looked, I did the same thing for my Blade Runner design.

Halloween Machine Twenty-Thirteen!

 Hello ladies and ghouls!  It's once again Halloween, which means I can catch up on the post I forgot to do last year.  Well, that and eat ALL the candy.  This year was my 7th annual costumed pumpkin carving party, and so once again I felt obliged to do some original art for the invitations.  You may recall previous years here and here.  It kind of forced me to do a style that I hadn't really messed with for a year, but it was fun.  You'll also notice the artwork from the previous year, which, due to a sugar-induced coma I forgot to post last year.  Finally, there is a new feature, one of my few forays into 3-dimensional artwork.  I went as Kane from 'Alien' this year, and decided to create my own chest-burster.  This little sucker is made from styrofoam, sculpey clay, wire, some plastic, hot glue, house paint, and mod podge.  Happy Halloween everybody!

It's Just a Jump to the Left...

For the 2nd movie poster this month I've illustrated the insane Halloween classic, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."  This one was fun, but a bit of a beast.  I had to redraw Tim Curry about 5 times to get his creepy mug the way I wanted it.  You can see a few of the earlier versions below.  My favorite part of this one is Riff Raff and Magenta firing their anti-matter lasers to create the border.  They were by far the easiest characters to draw.  I know it's probably a little controversial to do a Rocky Horror poster that doesn't actually depict Rocky in all his muscular glory, but I thought it was more fun to maintain a bit of mystery about the character.  Now I'm off to start work on my Halloween costume for this year.  I intend on being a complete bloody mess.

We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes

Hello m'lovelies!  It's that time of year again!  Halloween is just around the corner, and as such I've been wearing last year's Adam West Batman costume around the house as much as humanly possible while procuring a nest made of "fun-size" candy bars in the living room that I sleep on and guard with the ferocity of a mother polar bear.  

When I find time, however, I've also been working on some artwork.  I got the full lineup of films for the local repertory theater, picked out a good one for later in the month, (to assure I had plenty of time) and had been working out the comps for a poster when suddenly I had an idea I couldn't shake for the screening of "Psycho."  The only problem?  It was the first screening of the month, giving me only a week to work it into my schedule and get it to print.  Thanks a pantload creative unconscious!  Well, somehow it all fell into place much faster than I'd anticipated, and I got the entire thing done less than 2 days after the initial conception.  It was an easy birth.

Movie Mania Part II

Last July marked a very sad occasion for myself and many of my friends.  It was the one year anniversary of the death of our beloved friend, Caleb Braudrick.  I don't quite know how to put into words the enormity of loss I still feel at his passing.  He was a fierce friend with a big heart and an infectious laugh who had a passion for helping the underdog.  He was a thoughtful man, a musician and writer, and perhaps the funniest person I have ever met.  He was also a huge fan of horror movies, and I attribute some of my own love of the genre to his influence.  We decided to celebrate his life with a double feature of two of his favorite films, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Lunch Meat."  A local repertory cinema, The Paramount graciously allowed us to use their facility, and the evening was a huge success full of laughter, memories, and a few tears.

I was so impressed with The Paramount that I went back and spoke with them about future posters for upcoming events, and I got my chance to participate this weekend with a screening of "Apocalypse Now."  The producer of the film, Gray Frederickson, came and did a Q & A and signed posters.  It was cool to get to chat with him about the film and rub elbows with other cinema lovers.
